Rachel & Finn, departure

Rachel Berry gingerly stepped out of her car, careful not to make too much noise as she hastily unloaded all the Vera Bradley print bags from the trunk. After many hours of decisive packing and heavily drafted lists, she had managed to only pack two suitcases and a carry-on. Needless to say, it was a grand improvement from her original plan of double that amount. Because, thinking practically, she wouldn’t be needing a new outfit for every day. A washing machine would probably be available wherever she and Finn stopped along the way on their…road trip.

The very thought of it sent a rush of adrenaline up her spine. A road trip—just the two of them, for who knows how long? Now, one would look upon the situation and think, how could Rachel Berry agree to such an experience so willingly, and with such haste? The thought of her and Finn alone on the open road helped, but also the fact that it would be the biggest risk she’d ever taken. After the spurring kiss at Nationals, she had realized that she could do good with a bit more danger in her life. And she felt so safe with Finn, so why not? Besides, Kurt had promised to cover for them. The only regret she might have in this whole thing was making it a secret affair, probably worrying both the Berries and the Hudson-Hummels. But, she had faith in Kurt, and if the case came down to it, she was sure both respective parents would feel better in knowing (granted, Kurt finally gave in and told them) that their two children were together, safe and sound.

Straightening the sunglasses and headscarf she donned (even though it was barely 6 am on a Saturday, she wanted to remain as incognito as paossible), she stacked the suitcases neatly beside Finn’s truck and tiptoed up to the house. As per instructed by Finn himself, she tossed a pebble up at his window, praying that his was still the second one to the left, or at least that it wasn’t his stepfather and mother’s bedroom.

Finn had woken up hours before his body clock would normally alert him, the small streams of light illuminating his unusually tidy room informing him that it was in fact, early morning, perfect time to escape. He tiptoed around his room, which became extremely difficult when his toppling six foot frame found the only messy area to trip over. He managed to prolong his crash and find his feet, hushing himself.  Stretching out, Finn looked around his room, grinning at himself at his spotless chamber, he decided to tidy it in case his mom ever found out about his road trip and maybe he would earn extra brownie points and escape an extra week of grounding.

Finn was glad his girlfriend and step-brother were clever; he’d convinced them to sort out a plan as to where and why they weren’t spending the first few weeks of summer in their designated households. Kurt, the mastermind behind the lie, decided they we’re each out with their relevant friends, Finn was spending the time camping with Sam and Mike, who coincidently were actually doing said activity and Rachel was spending her weeks with Mercedes and Tina, traveling to a spa and eventually relaxing at Tina’s aunts, who happens to live in Cleveland, far enough away so the Berry men wouldn’t feel the need to give her a few visits. He knew how much they’d miss their little princess, not being able to cater to her, or listen to her joyful singing which escaped from the small cracks in her bedroom door every free moment she got. Finn on the other hand, was sure his mom and Burt would relish in the Finn-free zone they had, dreading the moment when his boyish attitude would waltz back through their front door. He couldn’t wait to spend his summer with Rachel. Sure they spent every single moment last year together, but this year, it was different. They’d been through everything: breakups, jealousy, cheating. He shuddered at the last thought but his mind quickly moved back onto the small brunette who always occupied his mind. It was all perfectly planned.

Finn was pulled from his train of thought by a small clicking against his window. He dragged open his curtains and a smile instantly etched upon his face as he saw said brunette standing at the bottom of his window, her suitcases surrounding her, making her seem a lot smaller than usual. He chuckled to himself before signaling that he’d be down in five. He quickly grabbed his duffel bag, slinging it over his shoulder and sneaking out his room, quickly glancing at the closed door of his mom and step-dads room, a small snore making their deep slumber known. He quickly jumped down the stairs, grabbing a few bottles of soda from the table Kurt had conveniently left there for them. Opening the door, he walked out, shutting it slowly and grimacing as it clicked with a bang.

Rachel nodded at his signal, going over to sit on her biggest of the suitcases while she waited for Finn. Wanting to keep her efficient, well-prepared reputation, she started rummaging through one of her carry-ons to re-check for the umpteenth time if all of her needed belongings were there.

In this one were what she needed for their long drives—a few packs of gum, a magazine or two, Slim Jims for Finn, a water bottle, an extra pair of sunglasses, Tic Tacs and…oh? Rachel fished passed the magazines and investigated a silky fabric she found. Was that—blushing, she stuck it into the dark depths of the carry-on as soon as she saw the Victoria’s Secret tags. She glared at the window two down from Finn’s, hoping the sleeping Kurt could feel her morbidness in his dreams—not nearly half the punishment he was going to eventually get for slipping lingerie into one of her bags while he helped her pack last night. She knew she saw a mischevious smirk on his face when he left.

Feeling sufficiently awkward and on edge (why would Kurt think she needed a reason for that? Did Finn say something? Was he expecting…a use for it on the trip? What if—), she closed the carry-on and melted into relief when she saw the tall football player exiting his house with a lopsided smile. Grinning, she pushed the sunglasses atop her covered head and practically launched herself from her seat, only giving him enough time to put down his duffel bag before embracing him, softly giggling when he lifted her and spun her around a little.

When he put her back on the ground, she smiled and took his hands with her gloved ones. “Hi,” she murmured, careful to be quiet. “Are you well-prepared? Did you pack everything you needed? Are you finally going to tell me where we’re going?” she immediately spouted questions, her evident curiosity breaking the still of the morning.

Awesome! It was actually Kurt’s idea, kinda a family thing but I stole it. Make sure you pack lots of swim stuff ;)

I will! Are you going to tell me where exactly we’re going, or should I be surprised?

I’m not telling you, you’ll have to wait till we get there. But all I’m saying is make sure you pack alot, it’s going to be a long drive!

Hmm…Against my better judgment, I’ll agree to driving unknown places with you. As long as you’re there (: But, I do have one condition…

And what is this condition?

It’s a secret. As in, the condition isn’t a secret, but the condition is that we keep our travels a secret. Get a believable alibi, possibly cover from Kurt, and we just…what is it? Hit the road?

Unless you’d rather not…it just sounds exciting to me :)
